Place of event: Western Province
Kuomboka means ‘to get out of water’. It is applied today to a traditional ceremony. This celebration of local culture attracts a lot of interest each year. The Lozi Litunga or King leads his people to higher ground when the water level of the upper Zambezi reaches a certain level. This is usually at the end of March or beginning of April. It is not so easy to plan a trip where one can be part of this ceremony, the date changes each year and is kept secret by the Barotse Royal establishment until very close to the actual date.
The route taken is from the village of Lealui, the capital of the Lozi Kingdom, to Limulunga, the summer capital which is where the Litunga spends most of his time today.
A lot of Drumming accompanies the barches as they make their way from the Litunga's dry season to the wet season residence.
This ceremony is not within the Kafue National Park but one travels through part of the park to get to Barotse and the Lozi Kingdom
